SBCC Athletics Starts #ImWalking Campaign to Promote Walking at Graduation

Santa Barbara City College Director of Athletics Rocco Constantino announced that the athletic department has started a campaign to encourage graduating student-athletes to walk at graduation. The department has named their campaign #ImWalking, a name that can be easily shared on social media.

"Last year was my first commencement ceremony at SBCC and it was truly incredible," said Constantino. "You can't ask for a better setting at La Playa Stadium and the feeling of pride was clearly evident in the stands and among our students and SBCC family. For anyone who attended or participated, it's a night they won't ever forget."

Connie Towne, a current Athletic Program Assistant at SBCC played softball for the Vaqueros and participated in her graduation ceremony at La Playa Stadium.

"For me, walking was such a symbolic event during mine and my teammates time here at SBCC," said Towne. "We had nine sophomores on our team that year and we were all fortunate enough to walk alongside one anther and share such a special day. We had a really great season of softball that year academically and athletically and so being recognized for our accomplishments on and off the field will be one of the greatest memories I have here at City College."

Constantino estimates that there will be around one hundred Vaquero athletes who will be among the proud graduates. Commencement is scheduled for May 10 with the ceremony set to start promptly at 5:00 PM.

"Our student-athletes work so hard to be successful on the athletic fields and in the classroom and commencement is a celebration of this major life milestone. In addition, when students participate and walk at graduation, it helps create such a memorable event for their family and friends who make it out to La Playa Stadium to support. It's just a fantastic event and I'd hate for any of our students to miss it for any reason."

Information about commencement can be found on the SBCC Commencement Information Page and any student-athlete who is interested in walking can contact Academic Counselor JoAnn Graham, Athletic Administrative Assistant Ashley Farias or any of their head coaches for information.
