Santa Barbara City College Director of Athletics Rocco Constantino announced that the athletic department has started a campaign to encourage graduating student-athletes to walk at graduation. The department has named their campaign #ImWalking, a name that can be easily shared on social media.
"Last year was my first commencement ceremony at SBCC and it was truly incredible," said Constantino. "You can't ask for a better setting at La Playa Stadium and the feeling of pride was clearly evident in the stands and among our students and SBCC family. For anyone who attended or participated, it's a night they won't ever forget."
Connie Towne, a current Athletic Program Assistant at SBCC played softball for the Vaqueros and participated in her graduation ceremony at La Playa Stadium.
Constantino estimates that there will be around one hundred Vaquero athletes who will be among the proud graduates. Commencement is scheduled for May 10 with the ceremony set to start promptly at 5:00 PM.
"Our student-athletes work so hard to be successful on the athletic fields and in the classroom and commencement is a celebration of this major life milestone. In addition, when students participate and walk at graduation, it helps create such a memorable event for their family and friends who make it out to La Playa Stadium to support. It's just a fantastic event and I'd hate for any of our students to miss it for any reason."
On May 10, #SBCC will be holding our annual graduation ceremony. We are encouraging our student-athletes to participate and walk in the ceremony. Everyone has worked so hard to reach this amazing life milestone; create lifelong memories by walking at commencement! #ImWalking pic.twitter.com/4x4y33zEWn
