Vaqueros sweep Saddleback, improve to 6-0

Ryan Massengale got a win in his first collegiate pitching start in Saturday's opener and the SBCC baseball team overcame an early 7-4 deficit to win the second game 10-8 and remain unbeaten.

Massengale, a 6-7 sophomore left-hander, allowed just one run on six hits in 6 2/3 innings and the Vaqueros took the opener, 7-1. Left fielder Connor McManigal had two hits and two RBIs for Santa Barbara (6-0), which has scored seven or more runs in all six victories.

The Vaqueros are the last unbeaten team in Southern California. They're averaging 8.5 runs and have outscored their opponents 51-22.

"We got two good wins against a solid team from the Orange Empire Conference," said third-year coach Jeff Walker. "We played well against the game."

The Gauchos (3-3) scored six in the second inning of the nightcap and led 7-4 after two innings. Brett Sesma went 3-for-5 and drove in a run in the fifth. Brandon Evans added an RBI single that cut the deficit to 7-6.

Saddleback got a run in the sixth before the Vaqueros put a four-spot up in the eighth. McManigal was also 3-5 and his two-run triple in the top of the eighth put the Vaqueros ahead to stay at 9-8. Patrick O'Brien's groundout brought in McManigal with the final run.

Noah Villegas pitched 3 1/3 innings of one-run, three-hit ball to earn the victory.

SBCC takes on West L.A. on Tuesday at 2 p.m. The game has been moved to El Camino College in Torrance.
