Matt Henderson has been chosen as SBCC's Male Student-Athlete of the Year for the 2014-15 season.
The 5-10 sophomore from Pleasant Valley High in Chico has been a two-year starter at shortstop on the Vaquero baseball team. He was a first-team All-WSC North selection this year after batting .346 (No. 6 in the conference) and stealing 15 bases.
He also earned a Gold Glove from the conference for his .966 fielding percentage. He was one of two players to receive the overall Gold Glove title in the WSC North. The Vaqueros shared the WSC North title with Oxnard at 17-7.
Henderson has a 3.26 grade-point average. He will be receiving his AA in Liberal Arts: Social and Behavioral Science emphasis this spring. He's committed to play at Florida State next year.
So Cal Super Regional: The third-seeded Vaqueros will host No. 12 Fullerton (23-15) on Friday at 2 p.m. in the opener of a best-of-3 series. Game 2 is Saturday at 1 p.m. and a third game will follow, if necessary, on Sunday at noon.
SBCC is 30-8 and has won six straight and 12 of the last 14. The Vaqueros are 17-3 at Pershing Park after Sean Barry and Justin Bruce posted back-to-back shutouts in last week's Regional series. The Vaqueros blanked Rio Hondo 5-0 and 4-0.
Sophomore catcher James Hill leads the offense with a .354 average and 33 RBI while Matt Henderson is batting .346 with 16 stolen bases. Barry is 9-3 and 11th in the state with a 1.46 ERA. He's third in California with 94 strikeouts. Bruce is 7-1 with a 2.09 ERA.
Fullerton notched a pair of 6-5 wins at No. 5 Cypress in the Regional with the second one coming in 16 innings. The Hornets went 10-11 in the Orange Empire Conference and finished in a three-way tie for fourth.
They're led by first baseman Oscar Heredia (.365, 27 RBI) and catcher Julio Rivera (.353, 12 steals). Fullerton's top pitcher is Dylan Prohoroff, who's 10-3 with a 2.27 ERA. He's fourth in the state with 85 strikeouts.
