Riverside rallies late to beat Vaqueros 5-3

Riverside scored two runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth on Wednesday to rally past SBCC 5-3 in a nonconference baseball game at the Evans Sports Complex in Riverside.

It was the second loss in two days for the Vaqueros (10-12). The Tigers, ranked No. 11 in Southern Cal, snapped a five-game losing streak and improved to 12-8.

Third baseman Chris Smutny went 2-4 for the second straight game. Jake Gagain, Connor Clark and Nicholas Allman also had two hits for Santa Barbara.

Steven Ledesma turned in a solid six innings, allowing just one run on three hits with six strikeouts and no walks. Five Riverside pitchers struck out 10 and the Vaqueros left 11 runners on-base.

Nicolas Bereaud had two RBIs for the Vaqueros with a two-out single that scored Smutny in the fifth and a sacrifice fly in the ninth. Andrew Cosgrove drove in Allman on a high chopper up the middle in the sixth, putting the Vaqueros ahead 2-1.

SBCC will host El Camino on Friday at 2:30 p.m. The 10th-ranked Warriors edged the Vaqueros 4-3 on Tuesday in Torrance.
