Jake Holton was chosen as the Athlete of the Week on Monday during the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon at Harry's Plaza Café. The Athlete of the Week is given to the best player in all sports from UCSB, Westmont, SBCC and the local high schools.

The 6-foot sophomore first baseman/third baseman from Los Gatos had a solo homer, the game-winning sacrifice fly in the eighth and pitched the ninth for the save. He's second in the state in saves and tied an 11-year-old school record with his eighth save.

The Vaqueros (15-16, 6-5) edged Hancock 2-1 to move into first place in the WSC North. They're tied for first with Moorpark and Ventura. Hancock and Cuesta are just a half-game back at 6-6.

Holton is batting .370 and ranks second in the WSC North in homers (5) and RBIs (30). He's fourth in batting average and slugging percentage (.565).

The Vaqueros will play four games in five days this week, starting Tuesday with a home date vs. Cuesta at 2:30 p.m.
