Vinson is SBART Athlete of the Week

Demetrius Vinson has been named Athlete of the Week by the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table. The freshman running back from Modesto, Calif., received the award during Monday's weekly press luncheon at Harry's Plaza Café.

The SBART selects the top male and female Athletes of the Week from all the high schools and colleges in the Santa Barbara area.

Vinson set a school record with five touchdowns in Saturday's 47-18 football win over College of the Desert. He ran 17 times for 188 yards and a hefty 11.1 average. His TD runs measured 27, 21, 3, 75 and 3 yards. Running behind a talented offensive line, Vinson has piled up 336 yards the last two games.

Vinson has the best average-per-carry in the state (9.4 yards) and the Vaqueros (4-1) lead the state in rushing (262.8 yards a game). They're No. 2 in scoring offense (44.8) and No. 12 in scoring defense (19.8). The Vaqueros have outscored their opponents 58-6 in the first quarter and 71-13 in the third.

The Vaqueros have a bye on Saturday, then open American Pacific League play on Oct. 15 at Allan Hancock (2-3) in Santa Maria at 2 p.m.

Santa Barbara, ranked No. 25 in the state, has scored 40 or more in all five games, winning four in a row since a 47-40 season-opening loss at Ventura. SBCC has won the last three meetings with Hancock and the Bulldogs lead the series 31-23-1.
