Isaac McClain has been selected as SBCC's male Athlete of the Year for the 2016-17 school year.

McClain was a two-year starter at offensive tackle on the football team and a two-time All-State and All-Conference player. He received a full scholarship to New Mexico State where he will play in the fall with Vaquero teammates Bilal Sharmoug and Nakota Shepard-Creer.

McClain has a 3.18 grade-point average and was the football representative on the Captain's Council, a group of SBCC athletes who give back to the community.

The Vaqueros went 7-4 in 2016 and hosted their first bowl game (the Beach Bowl) in 33 years. They're 26-16 the last four years and have played in bowl games in two of the last three years.

"To have two guys who've been boyhood friends (McClain and Sharmoug) get full rides to a Division 1 college is very, very special," said Vaquero coach Craig Moropoulos. "Isaac is the quiet guy but he plays very loud on the field. The No. 1 thing I appreciate about Isaac is he never complained how hard things were on the field or in the classroom. He utilized the support and guidance we offer and he's very coachable.

"I can't wait to see our three guys line up against Arizona State in the first game next season."
