Arceneaux scores 20 in loss to Ventura

Prince Arceneaux tallied a game-high 20 points on Saturday night but it wasn't enough as SBCC dropped a 77-59 men's basketball decision at Ventura.

Jalen Young led a balanced Pirate attack with 15 points and Vondel Faniel had 14 points and 14 rebounds. Ventura (15-11, 8-2) remained a half-game behind Cuesta (9-2) in the battle for first in the WSC North.

Arceneaux, a 6-5 freshman from Dorsey High, hit 9-17 from the field and grabbed eight rebounds. The rest of his teammates made just 37 percent. The Vaqueros were 4-21 on 3-pointers.

Ventura led 33-21 at the half and extended the margin to 19 points (57-38) with just under 10 minutes to play. The Pirates won the board battle 42-24.

"We had about five opportunities to finish at the rim in the first half and we couldn't do it," said coach Morris Hodges. "The big difference in the second half was the offensive boards. They got 13 of their 18 offensive rebounds in the second half and most of those led to putbacks."

The Vaqueros travel to Hancock on Wednesday night.
