Moorpark edges hot-shooting Vaqueros 87-85

Robert Hutchins and Chris Givens combined for 55 points and 13 3-pointers on Wednesday night but it wasn't enough as Moorpark edged visiting SBCC 87-85 in a WSC North men's basketball game.

Hutchins scored 30 points, missing his career high by one, on 12-25 shooting, including 5-10 from long distance. He also had five rebounds and four assists. Givens, a 6-foot freshman from Santa Barbara High, tossed in a season-high 25 points, thanks to 8-15 shooting from the 3-point line. He was averaging 6.3 points prior to Wednesday's game and he surpassed his previous high by eight points.

The Vaqueros (5-20, 3-6) hit 7-12 from downtown in the opening half and trailed 43-42. They made a season-best 14 triples in 27 attempts (51.9%) for the game.

Ben Clay had a double-double with 13 points and a season-high 16 rebounds and Drayten Howell missed by one point with nine points and a season-best 10 assists.

Elijah Holts topped Moorpark (10-14, 4-5) with 25 points and seven rebounds. The Raiders outshot the Vaqueros 48.5 to 44 percent and won the board battle 45-39. They were minus-15 in 3-pointers and plus-nine on free throws (14-23 to 5-9).

SBCC hosts first-place Ventura (16-12, 7-2) in its final game of the year on Saturday at 5 p.m.
