Freshman guard Francisco Gutierrez scored 14 points with five assists on Friday but SBCC came up short in its men's basketball season opener falling to West Valley 71-51 at the Cuesta Tournament in San Luis Obispo.
The Vikings, from Saratoga, led 30-27 at intermission, then outscored the Vaqueros 41-24 in the second half. West Valley outshot the Vaqueros 47.2 to 32 percent in the second half and 41.2 to 37.3 percent for the game. SBCC committed eight more turnovers (20-12).
Jerard O'Byrne added 10 points for the Vaqueros and Tyler Deavers grabbed 10 rebounds, including five offensive.
SBCC will take on Sequoias on Saturday at 5 p.m. in the round-robin tourney.
