SBCC erased a nine-point second-half deficit and forced overtime on Saturday before dropping a 79-72 decision to Alameda in the seventh-place game of the Monterey Bay Classic.
After falling behind 34-26 at the half, the Vaqueros (1-6) outshot the Cougars 45.5 to 38.7% and outscored them 42-34 to tie the game at 68 in regulation.
Freshman guard Joseph Holden scored a season-high 22 points and handed out four assists for the Vaqueros. He was 9-20 from the field and 3-9 from the 3-point line.
Zeke McMurtry, a 6-5 freshman guard from Baton Rouge, La., collected 20 points, 15 rebounds and four assists in 37 minutes off the bench. That's the fourth double-double for McMurtry, who's the No. 3 rebounder in the state at 12.4 a game.
The Cougars (2-7) overwhelmed the Vaqueros with 3-point shots, hitting 13-42 compared to 5-19 for SBCC. Alameda enjoyed a plus-24 advantage in long-distance points (39-15). The Cougars are the state's top 3-point team in makes (110) and attempts (294).
Abraham Ibrahim hit 6-11 from 3-point land and led the Cougars with 22 points.
Kile Kleiner had 12 points and eight rebounds for the Vaqueros and Taylor Burns chipped in with eight points and six boards. Santa Barbara won the rebound battle 51-43 but had twice as many turnovers (20-10).
The Vaqueros will host the 45th annual SBCC Classic on Thursday through Saturday. They'll take on the SBCC Alumni on Thursday at 6 p.m. The other first-round matchups are Canyons vs. Oxnard at 2 p.m.; Desert vs. L.A. Trade Tech at 4 p.m. and Bakersfield vs. L.A. Valley at 8 p.m.
