Jonny Hogan shot even-par 72 to claim medalist honors in WSC No. 2 on Monday at the Alisal Ranch golf course in Solvang. Canyons edged SBCC for the team title, 374-377.

The Vaqueros went 6-1 in the eight-team tourney and coach Chuck Melendez chalked up his 500th conference win. In 15 seasons at the helm, Melendez is 503-438-3.

Hogan, a former Santa Ynez High standout who's played the Alisal many times, shot 72 for the second straight WSC tourney. All six Vaqueros were in the 70s with Brett Patton, a sophomore from Dos Pueblos High, shooting 73, Manny Manzone 75, Joakim Flinck 78 and Jaren McCartney and Alec Constantinides 79.

"That doesn't surprise me that we had all our guys in the 70s," said Melendez. "I expect that from our team. We've been shooting a lot lower in practice with a lot of scores in red numbers (under par). I was a little surprised the entire field didn't play better, it was a perfect day for golf."

Canyons won its second consecutive WSC tourney to improve to 14-0. SBCC is 12-2 and Glendale, which finished third on Monday, is 9-5.

The Vaqueros return to action on Wednesday in the Mt. San Jacinto Eagle Classic at Soboda Springs.
