Niels Andersen and Manny Manzone shot 74 on Monday but SBCC had an off day in the State Championship Preview men's golf tournament at Desert Island Golf and Country Club in Rancho Mirage.

Reedley won the 18-team event at 367 (7 over par) and the host College of the Desert was second at 372. Riverside took third at 375, followed by Canyons (378) and Ventura (380).

The 74 was a season best by Andersen, a freshman from San Marcos High. Jake Ledbetter shot 78 for the Vaqueros, who finished 11th at 387.

"The conditions were good and this course was get-able," said Ledbetter. "I was 3-over after 3 holes and I played a little better the rest of the way."

The 6,716-yard, par-72 Desert Island course will also host the 36-hole State Championships on Monday, May 9.

"We had a tough day today and we're going to have play much better just to get to the state tournament," said SBCC coach Chuck Melendez. "The conditions were great. I was a little surprised the scores weren't lower."

The Vaqueros will play in WSC No. 5 on Monday at Antelope Valley CC.
