Niels Andersen and Theo Andre-Fouet shot 77 on Monday, leading SBCC to fourth place in WSC No. 1 at Stockdale CC in Bakersfield.
Canyons won the eight-team men's golf tourney with 374 strokes. Ventura was second at 384, followed by Glendale (388), SBCC (391) and Citrus (391).
The five Vaquero scorers were all bunched between 77 and 80. Brant Schenk carded a 78, JB Jandro shot 79 and Trent Caraher 80. The Vaqueros (25-15, 4-3) won a playoff for fourth with Citrus, thanks to Sean Mitton's sixth-man score of 83 which was one shot better than the Owls' sixth man.
"It's a little disappointing that we didn't play better in the conference opener," said coach Chuck Melendez. "We need to play better because the WSC is going to be pretty competitive."
Joey Herrera of Ventura was the medalist of the 48-player field at 1-under 70. Ben Campbell of Canyons was second at 72.
The Vaqueros will play in WSC No. 2 on Monday at River Ridge GC in Oxnard, starting at 10 a.m.
