The winds were howling in the Antelope Valley on Monday but Niels Andersen and Brant Schenk navigated the gusts to take second and fourth in WSC No. 9 men's golf tournament at Antelope Valley Country Club in Palmdale.

Andersen, a sophomore from San Marcos High, shot 74 to tie for second and Schenk, a freshman from Santa Cruz, carded a 75 to tie for fourth. Daniel Taplin of Canyons was the medalist at 1-over 73.

Andersen is averaging 74.5 strokes in 13 tourneys this year with one medalist honor and two runner-ups.

Canyons shot 381 to win its seventh WSC tourney, edging Ventura by two strokes. The Vaqueros were third at 393 and they shot two better than Citrus. Canyons tops the WSC standings at 59-4, followed by Ventura (53-10), SBCC (45-18) and Citrus (35-28).

"The wind was really blowing, 28 to 38 mph with gusts up to 45 mph," said Vaquero coach Chuck Melendez. "I'm really surprised how well these guys played in those conditions. Niels and Brent were at even-par with about six holes to go."

Theo Andre-Fouet and Sean Mitton added 81s for the Vaqueros, who've practically clinched a spot in the Southern Cal Regional with two WSC matches to play.

The WSC Finals will take place on Monday at Cypress Ridge in Arroyo Grande. WSC Nos. 10 and 11 will be held the players will compete over 36 holes, starting at 7 a.m.

The top three teams in the standings will advance to the Regional along with the best 36-hole score on Monday among the other five teams.
