Ex-Vaquero Harkins takes 8th in PGA Tour event

It took former SBCC star Brandon Harkins a while to get to the PGA Tour and now he's making the most of his rookie season.

Harkins was the 2007 WSC Player of the Year for the Vaqueros and went on to play two years at Chico State. He's played on the PGA Tour Canada, PGA Tour Latinoamerica and the Web.com Tour, where he earned his PGA Tour card last year.

In his first PGA event, he finished ninth in the Safeway Open on Oct. 5-8 at Napa, Calif. He had four top-25 showings in his first seven events. Last weekend, the 31-year-old shot a career-best, 8-under 64 in the first round and went on to finish eighth in the CareerBuilder Challenge at La Quinta.

He fired a 2-under 70 on Sunday and tied for eighth at 18-under, earning $171,100. He moved up 18 spots to 32nd in the FexEx Cup.

Harkins is averaging 70.1 per round and is 42nd on the PGA Tour money list with $506,212.
