Gabe Cloquet shot 78 on Monday to lead SBCC to second place in the first WSC men's golf tournament at Valencia Country Club.

Ventura topped the nine-team field with 388 strokes. Santa Barbara was second at 395, one stroke better than tourney host Canyons. Glendale was fourth at 402.

Cloquet, a freshman from Belgium, had an eagle on the first hole after a shotgun start. He tied for seventh with his 6-over 78. The Vaqueros had five players between 78 and 80. Jack Heavey, Zach Steinberger and Kotaro Noda tied for 11th at 79 and Felix Dine shot 80.

Clay Kucera of Canyons was the medalist at 74, one shot ahead of Glendale's Zack Silverman.

"We have a brand-new team and I was happy with how we finished after we struggled early in the round," said coach Chuck Melendez. "Anytime you have four guys in the 70s, it's a good day."

The Vaqueros will travel to Bakersfield for WSC No. 2 on Monday, Feb. 12 at Rio Bravo CC.
