Canyons used great balance to hold off SBCC 371-382 on Monday in the third WSC men's golf tournament at River Ridge Golf Club in Oxnard.
The Cougars are the third team to win a WSC tourney, following in the footsteps of SBCC and Ventura. Their 371 is the lowest winning score this season. Ventura took third with 399 strokes and Glendale (402) was fourth.
Nobuhiko Wakaari of Canyons was the medalist at even-par 72. SBCC's Theo Andre-Fouet was one stroke back at 73 and tied with a pair of Cougars, Tom Sims and Anguerrand Voisin. Brant Schenk of the Vaqueros shot a season-low 75 and tied for fifth.
The Cougars' five scorers were between 72 and 78 while the top five Vaqueros ranged from 73 to 79.
Preston Gomersall and Zach Steinberger were added to the SBCC lineup in the No. 5 and 6 slots. Gomersall shot 77 and placed eighth while Steinberger carded a 78 and tied for ninth.
SBCC improved to 46-3 overall and remained atop the tight WSC race at 22-2. Canyons is one game back at 21-3 and Ventura (20-4) is two games back in third.
The Vaqueros will play in WSC No. 4 on Monday at Valencia CC with a 10 a.m. shotgun start.
