Canyons wins third straight WSC tourney, edging Vaqueros by two

Canyons edged SBCC 387-389 on Monday to record its third straight WSC men's golf tournament win in WSC No. 5 at Santa Maria Country Club.

The Cougars totaled 387 to beat the Vaqueros by two strokes. Ventura was third in the nine-team field at 398.

Brennen Boulger of Antelope Valley was the medalist at even-par 72. Nobuhiko Wakaari and Jack Green of the Cougars tied for second at 74.

SBCC had three players in the top 11 – fourth-place Theo Andre-Fouet (75) and eighth-place Preston Gomersall (78) and Felix Dine (78). Trent Caraher and Mikha Benedictus tied for 12th at 79. Benedictus, a sophomore from Dos Pueblos High, was making his season debut.

Canyons moved into first place in the season standings for the first time this year. The Cougars are 37-3 and the Vaqueros are one game back at 36-4. Ventura is third at 32-8 and Glendale is fourth (23-17), one game ahead of Bakersfield.

SBCC is 67-10 on the year with two tourney wins and five second-place finishes.

The Vaqueros will travel to Palmdale on Monday to play in WSC No. 6 at Antelope Valley CC with a shotgun start at 10 a.m.
