Igor Haenel fired a 1-under 71 on Wednesday to earn co-medalist honors in the Cuyamaca Classic at Singing Hills Golf Resort in El Cajon.

Haenel, a sophomore from Austria, shot a career-low round for the second time in three days. He tied for first with Nick Van Fleet of Palomar and Luke Bartram of Cypress.

SBCC freshman Isaac Stone shot a season-low 72 to tie for fourth and Matt Pate turned in a 75 to tie for 10th.

Cypress won the 10-team tourney with 369 strokes. The Vaqueros were a close second with a season-low 371 which was one stroke better than third-place Palomar. Irvine Valley and Mt. SAC tied for fourth at 377.

Preston Gomersall added a 76 on a day when all six Vaqueros shot between 71 and 79.

The Vaqueros shaved two strokes off the season-best 373 they shot in WSC No. 3 on Monday. Three Vaqueros had season-best rounds -- Haenel (71), Stone (72) and Preston Foy (77).

"I'm really happy with how our guys played," said SBCC coach Chuck Melendez. "They competed very well and held it together a little better on the back nine. We're getting better and better and our confidence is increasing.

"This is a pretty close-knit unit and there's a lot of camaraderie happening. We're having fun and we'll keep improving. Hopefully, we'll get a first place at some point instead of all these seconds."

The Vaqueros (45-17) will play in the Riverside Invitational on Monday at Victoria Club.
