Blake Bornand and Isaac Stone tied for second on a record-setting Monday in WSC No. 4 at Stockdale Country Club in Bakersfield.

Bornand, a freshman from San Marcos High, and Stone, a freshman from Santa Barbara High, both shot season lows of even-par 71 to finish in a five-way tie for second. Felix Schrott of Canyons was the medalist at 1-under 70.

Canyons fired a season-low of even-par 355 to beat the Vaqueros' season-best 367 by 12 shots. Ventura was third at 383 and Bakersfield took fourth at 392. Six players shot par or better, including four from Canyons. The Cougars' six players were all between 70 and 74.

Igor Haenel, SBCC's No. 1 player from Austria, shot 72 and tied for seventh. Preston Gomersall carded a 73 and tied for ninth. The Vaqueros lowered their season best by four shots. They've shot season-low team scores in three of the last four tourneys.

Canyons leads the way in the WSC standings at 28-0. SBCC and Ventura are tied for second (22-6) and Antelope Valley is a distant fourth at 14-14.

Canyons and SBCC finished first and second in the state last year.

"Canyons lit it up today and we were pretty good too," said Vaquero coach Chuck Melendez. "We had a few guys who were sick and they hung in there. We're getting better every round and our confidence is growing. That's a direct result of our hard work.

"We're trying to figure out a way to beat Canyons and one of these days, we're going to do it."

The Vaqueros will play in WSC No. 5, hosted by Hancock, on Monday at Santa Maria CC, starting at 10 a.m.
