Jelan Hutton ended 268 minutes of frustration by heading in a cross from Carlos Espinoza in the 88th minute on Tuesday night as SBCC earned a 1-1 men's soccer tie with Moorpark.
The Raiders (4-10-4, 1-6-2 WSC North) got their goal in the 20th minute when Trent Madison dashed through the heart of the Vaquero defense and scored on a free kick by Sebastian Velasco.
Hutton, a sophomore defender and former Santa Barbara High standout, notched his first goal of the year for the Vaqueros (9-8-1, 4-4-1), who suffered 2-0 setbacks in their last two games to Oxnard and L.A. Mission.
The Vaqueros had numerous scoring chances by Sadiki Johnson, Callum Challinor, Jessie Jimenez and Jose Abitia. Forty-eight seconds after Hutton's goal, Challinor delivered a sharp header that forced goalie Martin Martines to make a leaping save.
The Vaqueros outshot the Raiders 11-2 in the second half and 21-7 for the game. They had twice as many shots on goal (8-4).
"When you put enough balls on target, eventually one's going to go in the back of the net," said Hutton. "We got one goal but we were hoping to get two and get the win."
SBCC keeper Zac Gottlieb, one of six sophomores playing their final home game, made a stellar leaping save of a header by Madison in the 14th minute.
"We failed to take responsibility and put the ball in the back of the net," said coach John Sisterson. "We waited until the 88th minute to get a goal and then it was too late. The boys are disappointed. We're playing some attractive soccer and we're working hard but we just can't find the back of the net.
"I don't know if we're unlucky but sometimes, you have to make your own luck. We just don't seem to have that killer instinct at the moment. "
There were six yellow cards and a red card in the last 30 minutes. Sophomore defender Nicolas Genthon got his second yellow of the game, resulting in a red card in the 90th minute.
"It's unfortunate, he's going for a 50-50 ball and he's going in hard and he caught the player," Sisterson noted. "It wasn't intentional. Nick got the worst part of the exchange and he was on crutches at the end. On this surface, sometimes it's difficult to time it right when you're going for a 50-50 ball."
The Vaqueros travel to Santa Monica on Friday for their final game of the year at 2:30 p.m.
