Ventura spoils Vaqueros’ home opener, 6-3

Ventura took four singles matches and two doubles on Thursday to spoil SBCC's first home tennis match in three years with a 6-3 victory at Pershing Park.

Sophomore Sasha Hedberg, the Vaqueros' No. 1 player, stunned Hiro Koyanagi 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Koyanagi, a sophomore from Japan, won the state singles title last year and didn't lose a set.

Ventura improved to 3-0 and 1-0 in the WSC while the Vaqueros fell to 1-5 and 1-1.

Ryan Chung got SBCC's other singles point, beating Leo Santos 6-3, 6-3. Hedberg also posted the doubles point, teaming with Parker Turek to take the No. 3 set, 9-7.

The Vaqueros will host Bakersfield on Thursday at 2 p.m.
