Hedberg, Sekban win twice to reach WSC quarterfinals

SBCC's Sasha Hedberg and Emerson Sekban both won a pair of matches in straight sets on Friday to move into the quarterfinals of the WSC men's tennis tournament at Ventura College.

Hedberg, the No. 2 seed, swept Christian Curutchague of Bakersfield 6-2, 6-0 and Evan Gazic of Ventura 6-1, 6-1. Hedberg, 8-1 in singles this year, will take on Guenter Newman of Ventura on Saturday at 10 a.m.

Sekban, a freshman from England, knocked off John Robertston of Glendale 6-3, 6-3 and Diego Rodrigues of Ventura 6-1, 6-0. Sekban will battle Sammy Ramirez of Bakersfield on Saturday, also at 10 a.m.

Andrew Tufenkian defeated Andrew Berdan of Bakersfield 6-2, 6-0, then fell to top-seeded Corey Karen of Ventura 6-1, 6-2.

In doubles, two Vaquero teams won a match to move into the quarterfinals. Sekban/Tufenkian, the No. 2 seed, blanked Field/Lux of Bakersfield 8-0. Ryan Chung/Derek Lipanski edged Erin Meserkhani/Michael Akopians of Glendale 9-8 (6).

All quarterfinalists qualify for the CCCAA State Tournament on April 21-24 at The Ojai.
