A trio of SBCC players advanced to the Round of 16 on Friday in the WSC Men's Tennis Championships at Ventura College.
Emerson Sekban, the No. 4 seed, had a bye in the first round and then swept Mario Cabaloza of Bakersfield 6-0, 6-1. He'll take on Kevin Orellana of Glendale in Saturday's Round of 16.
No. 6 Spencer Ekola topped Florent Auteuil of Ventura 6-0, 6-1 in the second round. The freshman from Santa Barbara High will battle Arin Meserkhani of Glendale on Saturday.
Diego Santos defeated Damon Mitchell of Ventura 6-3, 6-2 in the second round. He'll face No. 2 Chris Pope of Glendale on Saturday.
Adolfo Ortega dropped a second-round match to John Robertson of Glendale 6-2, 6-2. Stevie Acuna and Dim Dros fell in the first round.
In doubles, No. 4 Sekban/Ekola had a bye, then knocked off Cabaloza/Hunter of Bakersfield 8-1. They moved into Saturday's quarterfinals against Meserkhani/Orellana of Glendale at Ventura College. All of the quarterfinal teams earned berths in the CCCAA State Championships at Ojai.
Santos/Ortega fell to Rodrigo Perdigao/Hamilton Walker of Ventura 8-6 in the Round of 16. Dim Dros/Jun Zhao beat Rafael Abdullah/Oscar Olguin of Pierce in the opening round, then lost to the top-seeded Bill Whitaker/Cruz Thayne of Ventura 8-0.
