Marvin Magg claimed first in the javelin (54.08 meters) and shot put (13.77) on Friday as SBCC recorded eight victories in the season-opening SLO Town Classic men's track and field meet in San Luis Obispo. It was a dual meet between the Vaqueros and Cuesta, plus a group of unattached and club athletes.

Magg, a sophomore from Germany, recorded three personal bests. His javelin effort was the No. 10 mark in school history. He also took fourth in the discus at 40.04.

The Vaqueros had six other winners. Sophomore Alex Heuchert took the 800 (1:58.85), Bas van Leersum won the 400 hurdles (54.20), football player Tyler Higby claimed the 200 (22.26), Luke McAllister won the high jump at 1.95 meters, Joseph Ochoa (freshman from Dos Pueblos High) took the hammer competition (30.90m) and Roberto Ayala claimed the triple jump (11.56m).

Adam Grimmitt was third in the 3000 steeplechase in 10:10.32, the 10th-best time in school history.

"The men got off to a good start," noted coach Scott Fickerson. "We were well-rounded and look to get points from a lot of different areas. That should help us later in the season."

The Vaqueros travel to Aliso Viejo to compete in the Soka Indoor Qualifier on Saturday, Feb. 14. The meet will be held outdoors but the marks could be used to qualify for indoor marks.
