Tyler Higby and Luke McAllister recorded wins for SBCC on Saturday in the prestigious Soka Invitational men's track and field meet at Aliso Niguel. The event featured seven four-years schools, including UC San Diego and Westmont, plus two other Community Colleges and a few club and unattached athletes.
Higby, a wide receiver and kick returner on the football team, captured the 200 meters in 22.19. McAllister won the high jump in 2.01m (6 feet, 7 1/8 inches). The marks were PRs for Higby, a freshman from Boise, Idaho, and McAllister, a freshman from Tulsa, Okla.
Alex Heuchert was second in the 800 (1:59.92) and 3000 (8:32.91) while Bas van Leersum took second in the 600 (1:20.09). The 4 x 400 relay team of Simon Bailey, Derek Reading, Ryan Hoffman and Van Leersum was second to UC San Diego, thanks to a storming anchor leg of 47.8 by Van Leersum.
"Today was a nice step forward for us in this still very early season meet," said coach Scott Fickerson. "We had many improvements over last week's meet and I saw a lot of great efforts all over the track. I'm really excited about our potential for the season."
SBCC travels to Ventura College for the WSC Relays on Friday.
