Higby, McAllister post wins at prestigious Soka Invitational

Tyler Higby and Luke McAllister recorded wins for SBCC on Saturday in the prestigious Soka Invitational men's track and field meet at Aliso Niguel. The event featured seven four-years schools, including UC San Diego and Westmont, plus two other Community Colleges and a few club and unattached athletes.

Higby, a wide receiver and kick returner on the football team, captured the 200 meters in 22.19. McAllister won the high jump in 2.01m (6 feet, 7 1/8 inches). The marks were PRs for Higby, a freshman from  Boise, Idaho, and McAllister, a freshman from  Tulsa, Okla. 

Alex Heuchert was second in the 800 (1:59.92) and 3000 (8:32.91) while Bas van Leersum took second in the 600 (1:20.09). The 4 x 400 relay team of Simon Bailey, Derek Reading, Ryan Hoffman and Van Leersum was second to UC San Diego, thanks to a storming anchor leg of 47.8 by Van Leersum.

"Today was a nice step forward for us in this still very early season meet," said coach Scott Fickerson. "We had many improvements over last week's meet and I saw a lot of great efforts all over the track. I'm really excited about our potential for the season."

SBCC travels to Ventura College for the WSC Relays on Friday.
