Bas van Leersum captured a Southern Cal Championship in the 400 hurdles on Saturday and three other Vaqueros qualified for next weekend's State Championships.

Van Leersum, a sophomore from the Netherlands, broke his school record for the third time this year and shattered the 53-second barrier for the first time with a 52.51 clocking. He's the No. 1 seed for the State Finals on Friday and Saturday at College of San Mateo.

Aaron Mateski was second in the javelin at 56.96 meters. Alex Heuchert took fourth in the 1500 in 3:54.99 (No. 3 all-time SBCC mark) and eighth in the 5000 (15:18.74). Marvin Magg was sixth in the javelin at 52.16 meters.

Non-qualifiers included Luke McAllister (7th in high jump, 1.92m), Tyler Higby (8th in 200, 22.36) and Joey Ochoa (11th in shot put, 12.87m).

"I'm proud of the men," said coach Scott Fickerson. "They had a great season and accomplished something no SBCC team has done in over 45 years (winning a WSC title). That's an awesome feat!

"We're sending a strong group of men to State and should come home with some hardware."
