Anton Nilsson captured the 200 and 600 meter races on Saturday for SBCC, which opened its men's track & field season in the Sunshine Invitational at Westmont College.
The event featured four-year schools like Westmont, Concordia, Vanguard, Fresno Pacific and Biola as well as top-notch athletes from the Santa Barbara area. Many of the races were indoor events as the four-year college athletes were trying to qualify for Nationals.
Nilsson, a freshman from Huddinge, Sweden, won the 600 in 1:22.11, edging Robert Blackwell of Concordia by three-tenths of a second. In the 200, he ran 22.68 to top a field of 23 athletes in four heats. Both times were personal bests.
Alex Ramirez took second and was the top collegian in the 5000 meters, setting a PR of 15:34.86. Edward Jones placed third in the discus at 38.07 meters.
The Vaqueros return to action on Saturday at the Soka Invitational in Aliso Viejo.
