Jones, Tapia go 1-2 in discus at WSC Coastal Meet

Edward Jones and Diego Tapia took the top two spots in the discus on Friday and SBCC placed fourth in the WSC Coastal men's track and field meet at Cuesta in San Luis Obispo.

Jones, a freshman from Mira Mesa, Calif. who had 30 tackles last fall as a defensive lineman on the football team, unleashed a heave of 41.20 meters (135-2), just two centimeters off his PR. Tapia threw 40.55 for second and also notched a personal best of 37.17 to take fourth in the hammer. Jones was sixth in the javelin at 40.0 meters.

Anton Nilsson won his fourth 400 hurdles title of the year with a 54.23 clocking that was 5.46 seconds faster than Aaron Cheeks of Cuesta. He was also seventh in the 100 at 11.51.

Emmett Wallace took fourth in the high jump with a season-best 1.85 meters, Robert Roberson was fourth in the long jump at 6.31 meters and Javier Gil placed fourth in the shot put at 11.38.

Adam Grimmitt was fourth in the 1500 (4:10.01) and fifth in the 800 (2:00.67). Jacob Ogawa and Arnulfo Basave both posted PRs in the 1500.

Alex Ramirez was fourth in the 3000 in 9:13.26 and teammates Patrick Lownes-Santos and Bradley Apodaca were close behind in fifth and seventh. Lownes-Santos' time of 9:15.71 was a personal best.

Cuesta won the six-school meet with 174 points and the Vaqueros were fourth at 69.

SBCC takes next week off, then travels to the Cal State L.A. Twilight Meet on Thursday, April 14.
