Edward Jones qualified for the Southern Cal Championships in two field events on Saturday, leading the SBCC men's track & field team at Cerritos College.

Jones, a sophomore from Mira Mesa High in San Diego, took ninth in the javelin (46.46 meters; 152 feet, 5 inches) and 12th in the shot put (13.29m) at the Southern Cal Prelims. Jones got the 12th and final qualifying berth on his last attempt.

Skylar Payovich, a freshman from Santa Barbara High, qualified 11th in the discus (40.72m) and just missed qualifying in the hammer with a 40.53-meter throw.

Cameron Shinn placed eighth in the triple jump (13.69m) to earn a spot in Saturday's So Cal Finals, which will also be held at Cerritos College.

Evan Askar took the week off and will compete in the 5000 on Saturday. He qualified in the 5000 and 10000 but decided not to run the 10K.

Jordan Shinn ran 58.67 in the 400 hurdles but failed to qualify. Other Vaqueros who didn't advance were Jacob Ogawa (1500), Chris Aichinger and Kyle Whitaker (pole vault) and Jose Tarula (3000 steeplechase).

"I'm proud of all our men today," said ninth-year coach Scott Fickerson. "They went out and competed tough and left it all out on the track and the field. It was great to see Eddie, Skylar and Cameron move on to next week. To those who ended their season today, I'm very proud of their efforts this year. To get this far is an accomplishment to feel really good about."
