Syeed Holtzclaw was third in the 600 meters and fifth in the 200 on Saturday as SBCC made its men's track & field debut in the Sunshine Open at Westmont College.
The Vaqueros were the only community college competing against NAIA schools and athletes from Cal Poly and the Santa Barbara Track Club.
Holtzclaw, a freshman from Albany, N.Y., ran 1:22 in the 600, which was won by Tom Hopkins of the SB Track Club (1:19). Jordan Shinn was eighth in 1:28.
Holtzclaw took fifth in the 200 in 23.37 and Austin Venezia was seventh in 23.60.
Brian Nnoli, a freshman from San Marcos High, placed fifth in the long jump (6.20m) and Lam Nguyen was ninth. Miguel Lozano was eighth in the discus with a PR of 29.99m and David Sweeten placed 10th.
The Vaqueros will compete in the Soka Invitational on Saturday in Aliso Viejo.
