Murillo-Perez leaps to third in WSC long jump final

Nicolas Murillo-Perez recorded a personal-best of 6.77 meters to finish third in the WSC long jump final on Friday during the WSC Prelims men's track and field meet at La Playa Stadium.

Murillo-Perez, a freshman from San Marcos High, covered 22 feet, 2½ inches. Steven Ashby of West L.A. topped the 21-man field at 6.89m.

The top nine in the running events advanced to the WSC Finals next Friday at Moorpark College. There were four field-event finals and a 10,000-meter final on an overcast Friday at SBCC.

After five finals, West L.A. has the early lead with 38 points. Canyons is second at 25, followed closely by Moorpark (24), Bakersfield (23) and Cuesta (22). The Vaqueros are in eighth place with 14 points.

Vaquero freshman Sean Fitzgerald took fourth in the 400 hurdles in 57.41. John Esteban Carlos of Dos Pueblos High was sixth in the shot put in a season-best 13.7m (43-2 1/2) and Nathan Brooks was 10th in the 100 in 11.12, missing the last qualifying spot by .01 of a second.

Murillo-Perez was 11th in both the 100 (11.22) and 200 (23.28). Brian Nnoli gave the long jump a try for the first time this year as the triple jump final is next week. Nnoli finished 11th in the long jump with a leap of 6.10 meters (20-0.25).
