Gulvin sparks Vaqueros to 3-2 win at Pierce

Middle blocker Robert Gulvin had 13 kills, nine blocks and a .611 hitting percentage on Wednesday night, leading SBCC to a 3-2 men's volleyball win over L.A. Pierce in Woodland Hills. The scores were 25-20, 10-25, 25-23, 18-25, 15-9.

The Vaqueros improved to 8-5 and finished the first round of WSC play with a 3-3 record. The Brahmas fell to 4-10 and 1-4.

Jackson Wopat had 12 kills and hit .500 and Taylor McCluskey added 10 kills, nine digs and six blocks. Matt Bohorquez made 12 digs and Kyle Smiley dished out 42 assists. The Vaqueros had two ace serves and 13 service errors.

SBCC hit .455 in the first set (10 kills, no errors in 22 swings) and .400 in the last.

"It was a tough night for our serve-receive, especially in the second and fourth sets," said coach Matt Jones. "It took us a while to execute our game plan. Our blocking was pretty solid but our transition setting was a little shaky on the pins."

The Vaqueros travel to first-place Long Beach (13-2, 6-0) on Friday for a 6 p.m. match. The Vikings' have won 13 straight matches.
