L.A. Pierce dropped the first set on Friday night, then claimed the next three for a 3-1 men's volleyball win to spoil SBCC's season finale at the Sports Pavlion. The scores were 21-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-12.

Taylor McCluskey had a double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs and Robert Gulvin notched eight kills and a .533 hitting percentage for the Vaqueros (9-10, 4-8 WSC). Raymond Barsemian led the Brahmas (7-13, 5-7) with 17 kills and a .351 hitting percentage.

"We were good early and we were blocking well," said coach Matt Jones. "In the second set, we couldn't get a kill. We were down 22-20 and we only had two kills in the set. Despite not playing great in that set, we battled right to the end."

Jackson Wopat, a sophomore from Dos Pueblos High, had eight kills and four blocks. Haward Gomes added five kills and Matt Hall had five blocks.

Kyle Smiley, one of three sophomores playing their final match for the Vaqueros, had 33 assists.

After hitting .267 in the first set, the Vaqueros hit just .123 in the last three sets for a total of .168. Pierce hit .286 and had nine aces.

"We were doing OK in the third set, then our serve-receive got a little shaky," Jones explained.
