After falling in consecutive matchups to the top two teams in the state, Santa Barbara City College men's volleyball has bounced back and swept their second match in as many days, dropping Grossmont College at home, 3-0 at the SBCC Sports Pavilion Saturday afternoon.
SBCC enjoyed this win as everyone got to play in the game. This was SBCC last game before they head into conference and after a very tough non-conference schedule.
"It helps us because we get to see what's out there," said head coach Jon Newton. "It helps us with the competition we see and there are a lot of teams down south that are very good and well have to see those teams in the playoffs if we make it."
SBCC started off the first set strong as they jumped out to a 7-4 lead. Then they continued to put their foot on the gas pedal and won the first set 25-19.
SBCC offense was led by outside hitter Haward Gomes as he finished the game with 15 kills.
The Vaqueros started the second set on fire as they jumped out to a 7-0 lead. But then they cooled of and Grossmont raced back into the game and got the score to 13-12 off a few error from the vaqueros. But the Vaqueros would gather themselves and finish the set 25-22.
SBCC got great production from outside hitter Kyle Skinner who finished the game with 14 kills. They also got great production from Setter Adam Simonetti as he finished the game with 23 assists.
The Vaqueros entered the third set with much of their bench taking the floor and the team went back and forth until Grossmont took the lead 10-8. The Vaqueros then scored five straight points to take the lead 13-10. SBCC finished the set of a kill by Gomes to win the set 25-23.
This is the second straight sweep for SBCC as the Vaqueros swept Santiago Canyon College Friday night at SCC. ,
Ater playing five teams in the top seven in the state the Vaqueros are ready to use their experience from a tough non-conference schedule for their conference schedule.
The Vaqueros improve to 8-3 on the year and their next game will be their conference opener Friday, March 16 at 6:00 p.m. against Antelope Valley at the Sports Pavillion.
