Jon enters his fourth season as head coach. A former middle blocker on the 2010 Vaqueros, Jon was named head coach on June 16, 2016.

Newton served as a volunteer assistant coach with the Texas A&M Aggies in the fall of 2019.

The 2018 squad had a 7-game improvement, going from 5-12 to 12-6 and finishing second in the WSC North. The Vaqueros qualified for the State Tournament for the first time in seven years.

Newton was the head coach of boys volleyball at San Marcos High in 2015 and 2016. He also volunteered as an assistant for the UCSB women's team and previously coached San Marcos' sophomore and JV squads. He's coached Santa Barbara Volleyball Club teams, taking a Girls 14 team to the AAU Junior Nationals in June of 2016.

After playing for SBCC, Newton transferred to Ohio State and played three seasons with the Buckeyes (2012-14), who won NCAA titles in 2011 and 2016. He was named to All-Academic teams by the Big Ten and Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association.

"I have high expectations for Vaquero volleyball," Newton said. "The goal of every player is to get to a four-year university, so the first goal is to help the student-athletes get to the next level. In terms of competitive success, our goals are to win conference and go to the playoffs."

Newton played at San Marcos High from 2006-09 and was first-team All-Channel League his senior year as well as team MVP.
