Chaffey piles up 22 runs in sweep of Vaqueros

Veronica Macias had a big day with the bat on Saturday, leading Chaffey to a pair of softball wins over visiting SBCC.

The freshman third baseman went 2-4 with two RBIs in a 14-5, five-inning win and was 3-4 with a three-run homer in the second game, which the Panthers won 8-2.

The Panthers (7-3) took a 5-0 lead in the second inning of the opener and extended it to 11-1 with six runs in the fourth. The Vaqueros (4-5) scored four with two outs in the fifth inning on a two-run, bases-loaded double by Sloane Greeley and a two-run single from Isabella Gregson.

Chloe Wells was 2-3 in the first game.

Chaffey led 3-2 after five innings in the second game, then erupted for five runs in the sixth.

The Vaqueros were coming off a long day on Friday when they split a home doubleheader with El Camino and Orange Coast, playing the first game at 11 a.m. and the nightcap at 5 p.m. in cold, foggy conditions.

Gregson and Wells had RBI singles in Saturday's second game.

"Though the score does not reflect it, we actually hit the ball hard today," said coach Justine Bosio. "We just need to be tighter on defense as well as do a better job of hitting our spots against the big hitting teams."

The Vaqueros will head down to Mt. San Jacinto for four tournament games on Feb. 16-17. They'll play the host Mt. San Jacinto on Friday at 9:30 a.m. and L.A. Mission at noon.
