Moorpark rallies to beat Vaqueros, 69-57

Moorpark used a 19-4 run to build a 15-point second-half lead on Saturday and went on to defeat SBCC 69-57 in a women's basketball game at the Sports Pavilion.

Elia Salazar led the Vaqueros (9-13, 1-7 WSC North) with 10 points and six rebounds and Jasmine Mata had nine points. Tatum Maciel contributed six rebounds, five assists and three steals.

The Vaqueros led 32-29 at the half but were outscored 40-25 in the second stanza. Moorpark scored the first seven points of the second half before the Vaqueros tied it at 39 on a 3-pointer by Jessica Valadez, a 17-footer by Mizhrua Bautista and a 12-foot jumper in the lane by Salazar.

Then the Raiders scored 19 of the next 23 points to assume a 58-43 advantage with 7:35 to play. Riley Abraham, a 6-1 center, had 11 in that run and finished with 26 points and 18 rebounds.

The second-place Raiders (16-9, 7-2) outshot the Vaqueros 45 to 35 percent and hit 18-23 free throws while the home team struggled at 54 percent (13 of 24).

"There's not a dry eye in our locker room right now, they're all crying," said SBCC coach Sandrine Krul. "They're beat up and they play with their heart and soul. I always say we're not validated by the wins and losses. That group in there is an amazing group.

"I've never coached so many young women who care so much for each other."

SBCC will host Cuesta on Wednesday at 5 p.m.in the Coaches vs. Cancer game.
