Barstow tops Vaqueros 80-71 in overtime thriller

Da'Netra Pollard tossed in a 40-foot buzzer-beater to force overtime and Barstow went on to down SBCC 80-71 on Sunday in the consolation final of the Antelope Valley Holiday Tournament in Lancaster.

Darla Morales topped the Vaqueros (4-10) with 14 points and eight rebounds. Andrea Morales added 13 points, four rebounds and four steals to earn all-tournament honors. Paige Nealey had 13 points and seven boards and Stella Dulay scored all nine of her points in the second half and OT.

Shawnequa Norwood led the Vikings (5-10) with 24 points and seven rebounds.

After trailing 28-25 at halftime, SBCC took its first lead, 34-32, on a three-point play by Andrea Morales. Barstow regained the upper hand over the next nine minutes and took a 60-52 lead with 7:09 to play.

The Vaqueros put together a 14-3 run, capped by five straight free throws from Dulay. Her last two foul shots gave SBCC a 66-63 lead with 2.4 seconds left. Pollard, who had 15 points, threw in her long 3-pointer to send it into overtime.

Andrea Morales hit a triple to tie it 70-70 with 1:48 to go in the extra session but SBCC was outscored 10-1 the rest of the way with the Vikings making 8-of-11 free throws.

Barstow outshot the Vaqueros 45.8 to 30.8 percent and hit 34-44 from the foul line in a rough game that saw each team whistled for 34 fouls. Santa Barbara made 29-39 from the charity stripe for a season-high 74.4 percent.

The Vaqueros will open 2015 with their final nonconference game on Tuesday, Jan. 6, traveling to Whittier to take on Rio Hondo at 5 p.m.
