Destinee King scored 13 points and grabbed 18 rebounds on Saturday night, leading SBCC to a come-from-behind 58-53 women's basketball win over L.A. Pierce at the Sports Pavilion.
It was the 16th double-double of the year for King, as who finished the top scorer (19.5) and rebounder (13.1) in WSC North play. She also had four steals.
King, who ranks No. 14 in state scoring (18.0) and No. 11 in state rebounding (11.6) for the season, had nine double-doubles in 12 conference games.
The Vaqueros (15-13, 6-6) tied for third in conference with Moorpark. Pierce, which had just six players, fell to 3-20 and 1-11.
Jocelin Petatan added 12 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three steals for SBCC, which won the board battle 50-39. Christina Mattis had nine points and a season-high six rebounds while Nalei'a Brackett contributed eight points and four assists.
The Vaqueros dominated the first quarter 21-11 but the Brahmas held them to four points in the second quarter and forged a 25-25 tie at the half. Pierce went on a 23-4 run to end the second quarter and start the third, building a nine-point lead (35-26) with 4:42 to go in the third stanza.
"I'm so happy we played well together in the fourth quarter," said coach Sandrine Krul. "Pierce went to a zone that affected our flow and we didn't figure it out until we started pressing and creating turnovers."
The Vaqueros played without their second-leading scorer Kesler Johnson (injury) and lost Jeanie Pattison at the 7:50 mark of the fourth when she committed her fifth foul.
Pierce opened the third quarter on a 10-1 run and took its biggest lead at 35-26 with 4:42 to go. SBCC didn't get its first field goal of the third until Kay Phosakham made a layup with 3:22 left, cutting the deficit to 35-28. The Vaqueros pulled within four by the end of the third (39-35), then outscored the Brahmas 23-14 in the last 10-minute quarter.
"We ended up 6-6 in a very tough WSC," added Krul. "All in all, it was a great teaching and learning season for our team. We have a solid group coming back next season and recruiting is going very well."
