SBCC freshman Destinee King has been selected to the first-team All-State South Region team for women's basketball.

The 5-10 guard/forward was No. 18 in the state in scoring (18.0) and No. 11 in rebounds (11.6). She had 16 double-doubles in 28 games. Her best game was a 30-point, 20-rebound effort in the conference opener at Hancock.

She was named MVP of the Western State Conference North Division earlier this week. She was the top scorer (19.5), rebounder (13.1) and shot blocker (2.3) in WSC play.

"What makes Destinee so good is her ability to be resilient," said Vaquero coach Sandrine Krul. "Yes, she is athletic and talented, but she has the tenacity to adjust to the difficulties of the game. Whether that be tweaking her game because she is being double-, triple- or quadruple-teamed, or moving out to the three and becoming a shooter because things aren't going well in the post, or taking the ball 90 feet on the fast break, her coachability to do whatever it takes for the team to win is her greatest gift.

"There is never a complaint, just always adapting to what is coming her way, which is what makes her an MVP and all-state player."
King has also been solid in the classroom.

"She has a difficult major in business administration and she earned a 2.8 GPA for the fall, but had already set her academic goals to achieve an overall 3.0 by the end of the spring," stated Krul. "I have no doubt she will get there because she will do whatever it takes to be an overachiever and achieve her academic and athletic goals."

Britney Thomas, a freshman at Mt. San Jacinto, was MVP of the All-State South squad. Other first-teamers were Aubri Smith (Ventura), Gina Henderson (Mt. San Antonio), Blaysen Varndoe (Santa Ana) and Jonnae Vermillion (Mt. San Antonio).
