Vaqueros cruise past L.A. Pierce, 72-42

SBCC jumped out to a 22-7 lead on Thursday night and went on to rout L.A. Pierce 72-42 in a nonconference women's basketball game in Woodland Hills.

Destinee King led the Vaqueros (13-9) with 15 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Jocelin Petatan added 11 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals and Jada Clark scored nine points with nine rebounds.

The Vaqueros shot 36 percent and only hit 1-17 from 3-point range. The Brahmas (2-17) hit 33 percent, making 1-9 from long range and 7-16 from the free-throw line. The Vaqueros drained 21-of-29 foul shots and dominated the boards 53-30.

Santa Barbara didn't make a field goal in the second quarter and was outscored 8-1. The Vaqueros led 23-15 at the break and 47-34 after three quarters. They dominated the final 10 minutes by a 25-8 count.

"I think we're realizing that we have to stay with what's working," said coach Sandrine Krul. "When we go away from what's working, we get outscored like we did in the second quarter."

The Vaqueros won the second half by 22 points (49-27).

SBCC opens the second round of WSC North play on Saturday when it hosts Cuesta at 7 p.m.
