SBCC sophomore Saralisa Ortega fired a 4-over 74 on Monday at Buenaventura GC to finish sixth at the 36-hole South Coast Classic women's golf tournament. The Vaqueros placed fourth in the tourney and second in WSC No. 1.
Ortega shot 84 at Olivas Links and 74 at Buenaventura for a 158 total. Fumika Matsumoto of Desert and Jamie Lopez of Citrus were the medalists at 3-over 145. Laleaga Meredith of Irvine Valley shot a 3-under 67 on Monday.
"We had a vast improvement over Sunday's round," said Vaquero coach Chuck Melendez. "It was a different course and the weather was better. We're making steady improvement."
Desert won the team title by 34 strokes, shooting 296 on Monday for a 615 total. Canyons was second at 649, followed by Irvine Valley (650) and SBCC (681). The Vaqueros carded a season-best 324, shaving 33 shots off their first round.
Sara Pettersson had the biggest improvement for the Vaqueros with an 82 that was 23 strokes better than her opening round. Laine Johnson and Tiffany Huang shot 84s on Monday.
Canyons won WSC No. 1 at 307. The Vaqueros were second with 324. Lopez (71) was also the medalist in the WSC meet and Ortega was second.
The Vaqueros will host WSC No. 2 on Monday, Sept. 15 at the Santa Barbara Golf Club, starting at 10:30 a.m.
