Carolin Chang carded a 3-under 68 on Monday and SBCC made an early-season statement by capturing the South Coast Classic and WSC No. 1 women's golf tournaments on the same day.

Chang, a freshman from Taiwan, was 10 shots better in Monday's competition, which was held at par-71 Buenaventura GC. Sunday's first round of the South Coast Classic was played at Olivas Links.

Chang (78-68--146) took fourth in the 11-school tourney and teammate Isabella Doub (78-71--149) was fifth. They both made the all-tournament team.

Lexandra So of Citrus was the medalist at 76-67--143, beating teammate Jamie Lopez (72-72--144) by a stroke.

Santa Barbara fired a 295 on Monday for a 73.8 average. The Vaqueros posted a 36-hole total of 607. Runner-up Citrus finished 34 shots back at 641. Sierra was third at 651.

SBCC captured the first WSC tourney by 19 strokes, beating Citrus 295-314. Canyons, last year's state runner-up, was third with 320.

So was the medalist in the WSC meet at 67, one stroke better than Chang.

"I'm very proud of my team," said Vaquero coach Chuck Melendez. "Those are darn-low numbers for an early tournament. We have a great deal of talent, we just have to match that talent with great work ethic and outwork everyone else."

The Vaqueros return to action on Friday and Saturday in the Desert Classic at Indian Canyon GC in Palm Springs.
