Two SBCC athletic teams have been named the best in the state for academics in the 2015-16 school year.

Eight of the 19 Scholar Team winners were from the Western State Conference.

The Scholar Team Award is the highest academic team achievement given annually by the CCCAA. All team members must have excelled academically with a total GPA of 3.0 or higher. The team should have demonstrated better than average accomplishments in intercollegiate athletic competition.

The 2015 golf team, under the direction of coach Chuck Melendez, captured its fourth state title in the last 10 years with an 80-6 record. Carolin Chang won the State title by shooting 7-over 151 at Morro Bay GC.

The Vaquero swimmers went 33-4, won their first WSC title and placed eighth in the State championships.

"This honor is the goal of our program each season," said women's water polo and swim/dive coach Chuckie Roth. "We are here for an education first and athletics second. Each season we strive to be the best in and out of the classroom.

"This is the best honor that I or one of my teams has achieved in program history. Congratulations to my athletes who worked for this honor."
