Santa Maria, Ca. In a bit of a blustery day at Santa Maria Country Club, the SBCC Women's Golf Team brought home 4th place with some higher-than-normal scores. Despite the setback, the Vaqs still hold onto 3rd place in the WSC standings through 6 tournaments as they head into the home stretch with the final WSC match in Bakersfield on the horizon, followed by the WSC Finals. "SMCC is a bit of a tough track with thick rough and tricky greens, and it affected our play today," said head coach Devin Engebretsen.  "It's going to be okay though as we still hold 3rd place, which is a big deal."  What Engebretsen is referring to is how the SoCal Regionals participants are selected from the WSC.  The top 3 conference finishers get automatic berths to SoCal, with the 4th and final spot going to the team outside of those top 3, finishing in 4th place or better on the Monday WSC Finals. "Basically, if we finish in 3rd place or better in conference, we automatically go to regionals. If we don't, then on Monday for the Finals we need to finish in the top 4 to go," added Engebretsen. The Vaqueros' worst finish for the season has been 4th place.

SBCC will travel to Bakersfield on Sunday for WSC #7, with an 11 am shotgun start at Rio Bravo Country Club. The following day will mark the WSC Finals which could end up being the determining round for SBCC to qualify for SoCal Regionals. "I like where we stand right now in terms of being able to basically control our own destiny.  Sophie is a little banged up, but Megan, Emily, Ella and Kim are all good players who can, and will, pick up the slack," said Engebretsen. Following the WSC Finals, the SoCal Regionals are slated for play at Simi Hills Golf Club on Sunday, November 5th and Monday, November 6th, with those scores determining qualification to the 3C2A State Finals, which are the following week.
