The 2016 women's squad had a spectacular season, winning 14 tournaments and going undefeated until the final day of the year, when they lost to Sierra and finished second in the State. The Vaqueros went 99-1 and Carolin Chang, a sophomore from Taiwan, won her second straight State individual title with a 3-under 141 (72-69). Chang was the first back-to-back State champion in 20 years. The Vaqueros had won their previous 20 tourneys in a row, dating back to 2015.

Melendez guided the Vaquero women to two State titles in a three-year span, including 2015 when they went 80-6 and won 11 tournaments. Chang shot 76-75--151 and claimed the State individual title at Morro Bay Golf Course. SBCC has won four of the last 11 state team championships.

In 2013, Melendez guided the Vaquero women to their third state title in eight years. They went 32-0 in Western State Conference play and 69-3 overall. The other state titles came in 2006 and 2008.
