Kaitlyn Saperstein scored the first goal of the season in the 28th minute on Thursday and Steph Romero headed in a late corner kick to give SBCC a 2-0 women's soccer victory over Golden West in the season opener for both teams at the Ventura Tournament.

Blayne Shoffit entered the game in the 26th minute and two minutes later, she delivered a perfect pass from the right end line to Saperstein for a 1-0 lead.

"I saw her blaze past a player and all the defenders were along the 6-yard block, so I just stepped behind and was yelling for her," said Saperstein, a 5-4 freshman from San Marcos High who drilled the ball inside the left post. "Luckily she saw me and placed a perfect ball in and I finished it."

SBCC outshot the Rustlers 13-4 and had seven corners in the second half.

Sophomore defender Emily Erwin preserved the shutout in the 54th minute when she deflected a shot on goal. Erwin, Lena Gustafsson and Andrea Skjold provided strong defense for the Vaqueros. Alex Camarillo, a freshman goalie from Dos Pueblos High, picked up the win in her collegiate debut.

In the 80th minute, Baylee Vincent delivered a corner kick from the left side and Romero pounded it past the keeper to make it 2-0.

"That was a great first goal and I thought we deserved the win," said coach John Sisterson. "I think we were a little anxious in our first game. We scored two good goals and we kept a clean sheet, which is most important."

The Vaqueros will take on City College of San Francisco on Saturday at 1 p.m. in their final game of the Ventura Tournament.
