Taft tops Vaqueros 1-0 in nonconference game

Taft scored a goal on a corner kick in the 29th minute on Friday afternoon and made it stand up for a 1-0 nonconference women's soccer win over SBCC at La Playa Stadium.

Carla Salazar took the corner from the left side and bounced it into the net between defender Lena Gustafsson and goalie Alex Camarillo.

The Vaqueros (6-4-4) outshot the Cougars (8-5-1) 11-8 but only had two shots on goal compared to six for Taft. The visitors got a measure of revenge on the Vaqueros, who posted a 1-0 victory at Taft on Sept. 1.

"It was disappointing that we only got two shots on goal," said coach John Sisterson. "It's a numbers game and if you're not hitting the target frequently, then you're not going to get the back of the net.

"We started quite well but then we had to pull Giselle Estrada out, who was doing very well in the midfield. I saw a change and it went for the worse from then on in. We just couldn't connect any passes and we were making too many errors. It was just an off-day and that's unfortunate after such a good game against Ventura on Tuesday."

Taft had six corners in the first half and seven for the day. The Vaqueros had just one corner and it came in the 84th minute.

The Vaqueros open the second half of WSC North action on Friday when they host Oxnard at 7 p.m.
